Firstly, what is Mable?
Mable is an online platform that helps connect independent support workers to those seeking support in their local area. Currently, Mable helps thousands of ageing Australians as well as people living with a disability across all states. Support workers on Mable offer all kinds of support services, including therapy supports, nursing services, personal care, and more.
How does it work?
If you’re excited to see how many support workers are in your local area, you can search here. If you’d like to get in contact with any support worker on Mable, you can do this right after you sign up for free.
Want a support worker to contact you instead? You can always “post a job” for workers to respond to. Once you’ve connected with someone you think would suit you, you can then use the Mable messaging system to organise when you’d like to receive support. Once an agreement is in place, you’re all ready to get support! It’s that easy.
If I’m on the pension, how can I pay my support worker?
Even if the pension is your main source of income, you can still engage with and receive support from workers on the Mable platform. All rates of pay on Mable are negotiable between you and your worker, so you can work together to agree on an hourly or flat rate that works for you both. You can use your credit or debit card to pay your worker directly through the platform.
Can I use other types of funding to pay for my support?
Of course! As a pensioner, you might be beginning to think about getting support around the home – you might have even already been assessed by a Regional Assessment Service (RAS) or the Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT) to receive a Commonwealth Home Support Programme or Home Care Package respectively.
If you gain access to a Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP), you will need to choose a provider to begin organising your own support and engage with workers through the Mable platform. With a CHSP, each support session you receive can be subsidised, meaning you don’t have to worry about supplying the full cost of your support. You can also continue to receive the pension while on a Commonwealth Home Support Programme.
If you are assigned a Home Care Package, you’ll need to choose a home care provider that suits you to start receiving support from motivated workers on Mable. If your chosen provider manages your funds, they can sign up to Mable on behalf of you to begin hiring workers, or, you can create your own account and connect with workers that way. It’s totally up to you.
Remember, you will have to choose an appropriate service provider once you are allocated a CHSP or Home Care Package if you’d like to use the funding to pay for your support. Each service provider is different, and not all work with platforms like Mable, so it’s important to choose a provider who is willing to give you control and it’s extremely important that they understand your interests, needs and support goals.
