We often hear from families looking for some support for their parents, and clients who’d like some ideas for getting out and about. What if you could spend a week not only getting your home organised, but also doing more of what you enjoy? We’ve looked for through our Requests of the Week and asked our Client Support team for inspiration.
Here’s a week with a Better Caring worker:
Monday. Get set up for the week with some shopping and meal preparation. You can also plan your week and get help with booking tickets or making reservations.
Tuesday. Head to the cinema for an 11am movie with lunch and coffee. This is one of the best-value ways to see a movie and you’ll get to meet other people. You could also go to a museum or an art gallery, both of which offer a range of access programs.
Wednesday. Better Caring workers have been asked to help with home decluttering, gardening or odd jobs around the house. And one of our most frequent requests is for help with organising paperwork. Admin can be tedious, so why not get someone to share the burden?
Thursday. Some Better Caring workers specialise in helping seniors navigate technology. They can help you find your favourite websites and connect you to Skype so you can talk to grandchildren. And if you were inspired by yesterday’s decluttering, you could also get a worker to help you sell your goods on eBay.
Friday. One big benefit of retirement is that you finally have time to take the course or indulge that interest you’ve always wanted to. A worker can help you find and register for a community college course or even online (although embroidery and craft are a lot more fun with other people). Clients also often ask us about support for their dogs and cats. If you don’t have your own, you can request a worker with a friendly dog for some walking. You can get out and about, and a dog on a leash is the ultimate conversation-starter. You’ll make the dog’s day too.
Saturday. If you enjoy pampering and want to stay in after a busy week, some of our workers enjoy painting clients’ nails for them, or doing their hair. If footy’s more your thing, you can find a Better Caring sports enthusiast to go with you. A popular Saturday evening activity is the theatre or a musical. Many venues and productions offer good pensioner concession prices.
Sunday. For weekend fun, we’ve had requests as diverse as swimming buddy and surf instructor. But if you don’t like cold water, a worker can accompany you to the beach for a walk along a marina or foreshore.
