Is your small business prepared for the upcoming long weekends and public holidays?

Care Workers April 11, 2019

The Easter long weekend and Anzac Day are only a couple of weeks away. Whether you’re looking forward to a little time off, or an opportunity to earn some extra money over the break, now is the time to think about what you need to do.

For many Australians, the upcoming Easter long weekend and Anzac Day are a time to sit back, relax and enjoy and few days break. As an independent worker, you have a responsibility to your clients to make sure they know what your plans are over the public holidays.

Taking time off? Help your clients to prepare

As a self-employed support worker, it’s up to you whether public holidays mean days off. Your clients may still need your ongoing support over the holidays, like they would any other day of the week. That being said, you can choose whether you want to be available for your clients to engage you over those days. If you have decided you won’t be able to work over the period, make sure you give your clients plenty of notice so they can make alternative arrangements. Even better – if you have any Mable ‘buddies’, or other independent workers you know on the marketplace, you can offer a trusted recommendation to help them to fill the shift.

Think about your rates over the public holidays

As an independent worker, you set your own rates and agree these in advance with your client. You may choose to charge differently while working over the public holidays, or you may not. It’s entirely up to you. However if you do decide to review your rates, there are some things to consider if you are going to do this.

  • Make sure you discuss any revision to your rate with your clients well in advance. It’s important they agree to the change and accept an amended agreement through the Mable platform before the work is delivered.
  • The conversation may take your client by surprise, so take this into account when you bring it up.
  • Your rate change decision should be made in the context of your relationship with your client. It’s always a good idea to explicitly state on your profile that your rate increases for public holidays, so your client understands this from the outset.

Picking up extra work over the public holidays

If you would like to work, but are not currently engaged, be sure to keep an eye on your jobs board. With some independent workers opting to take time off, there are often clients looking for someone new to cover shifts over this period.

With the Easter break around the corner, now is the time to talk to your clients your plans – and get an idea of what they will be needing over the holidays. Looking to pick up some extra work? Check out jobs in your area now.
