Meet Robin, independent worker on Better Caring!

Care Workers, Case Study January 3, 2018

We talk to Robin, an ex-probation and parole officer who has written six novels and offers social support to a range of clients.

I am a retired probation and parole officer and am used to dealing with people from all walks of life. In fact, some of them have inspired characters in my books. Writing can be a bit solitary so I’ve signed up to Better Caring to spend time with people who are ageing, hear their stories and help them with whatever needs doing. I’d like to make a contribution to the community.

Independent worker RobinIn 2016 my partner and I walked the Camino de Santiago, a pilgrimage walk, which stretches for 800 kilometres across northern Spain. What really opened my eyes was how some people doing it wouldn’t be stopped by any disability, ailment or handicap. That really taught me the value of perseverance.

I’ve had all kinds of roles, full-time, part-time and casual. What I like about working through the Better Caring platform is that as an independent contractor I work my own hours and make my own arrangements.

Independent worker RobinI’m happy to do everything from cooking and cleaning, to taking clients on outings, to the doctor or senior citizens’ meetings. I’ll do gardening too, as long as someone shows me the difference between the weeds and the flowers!

People who are ageing have interesting stories to tell about their lives, and they need people to listen to them. I’ve been interviewing people all my working life and I find them fascinating. As well as writing, I love going to the beach, bushwalking and reading. If there are any fellow bookworms looking for a support worker, we will never run out of things to talk about.
