Ben and Guy’s support story: visiting the Royal Easter Show

Care Workers, Case Study, Consumers May 8, 2018

Two people in the Better Caring community, Ben and Guy, live over five hundred kilometres apart, but connected through the platform for a day of support at Sydney’s Royal Easter Show. Better Caring allows endless support possibilities – this is just one of them.

Guy, a recent retiree, came across Better Caring after realising he wanted to give back to his local community in Sydney.

“I liked the idea of doing some helpful, supportive work. I wanted to give something back to the community.”

Ben, a consumer on Better Caring, lives near Coffs Harbour with his mother Maryanne. She came across Better Caring through a friend’s recommendation and recognised the platform as an opportunity for her to connect with flexible support workers like Guy. With an upcoming trip to Sydney on the cards, Maryanne chose Better Caring to find Ben a companion to accompany him to the Sydney Royal Easter Show. Using the “Post a Job” feature on the platform, she began to receive replies for support workers across Sydney.

“Ben still talks about the Easter Show. It was a really good experience because it gave him a bit of independence from his family.”

According to Maryanne, finding the right support for Ben through platforms such as Better Caring allows him to gain independence, engage with the wider community and take part in new experiences. “Going to events like this really adds to his skills. It gives him something to be enthusiastic about, something to be excited about and something to talk about with his friends and family.” It also helps him break new boundaries. After four attempts, Ben built up the courage to experience the House of Horrors: “Freddy Kreuger met him and grabbed ahold of Ben, but he absolutely loved it. Everyone was in character including Ben”, said Guy.

For Guy, accompanying Ben is about providing opportunities to create memories. “To me, providing support is about creating a comfortable, memorable and exciting experience for that person.”

For Maryanne, using Better Caring to find a worker opened up a new support option. “It’s fantastic that the workers are checked and approved and have Police Checks and Working with Children Checks. The pricing is affordable and I love that there is transparency of the workers’ rates.”
