We have support workers on the Better Caring platform that come from all walks of life. Some have led dedicated careers in support work, while others work a few days of the week so they can carry out their passion to help people in their local community. One of these workers is Stephen – a successful singer-songwriter who spends equal amounts of time performing and support clients on Better Caring.
Living in the New South Wales Central Coast and recording frequently in Nashville, Tennessee, Stephen lives a busy yet creative life.
Even though he has two adult-contemporary albums at his back, over 30 years experience in the pharmaceutical industry and more than ten years experience as a support worker in aged care and disability support, Stephen shows no signs of slowing when it comes to doing what he loves.
“I’ve always had great people skills and I think it’s part of my personality to help others. Since I was 12 years old, I’ve loved performing and being an entertainer, but I think getting to know so many people through my support work has made me a much more confident person.”
As well as being a writer for the likes of Slim Dusty, Stephen has a strong passion for helping out his wider community.
“I decided to start volunteering for a community services centre when I lived in Sydney over ten years ago, and three months later, I became a support coordinator. From there, I started organising social outings and events for people of all ages living with a disability.”
After moving from the bustle of Sydney to the quieter Central Coast, Stephen discovered Better Caring, and immediately signed up.
“Working on Better Caring is completely different to the casual work and volunteering I’ve previously done,” says Stephen.
Through Better Caring, Stephen has been able to form a strong relationship with a client living in his local community. “We usually play a round of golf or visit a bowling alley, and it’s great that I can help him live freely and independently.”
The stability that Stephen found through Better Caring means he’s got more time to focus on what he loves: performing, producing, supporting others and spending time with his family. Since connecting with clients through the Better Caring platform, Stephen’s second album has been nominated for a Grammy Award and a Telly Award in the United States.
And as for his next performance?
“I’m always performing at restaurants around Newcastle and clubs in the Central Coast.”
“I can really see how much Better Caring benefits clients. Because they can connect with someone stable, they can build a lasting relationship with their support worker. For me, Better Caring means regular work, more opportunities, and stability.”
