Better Caring in the AFR: options for consumers to self-manage Home Care Packages

Better Caring was featured in the Australian Financial Review over the weekend (24 February 2018) about options for consumers to self-manage their Home Care Packages.

With an ageing population leading to increased financial pressure, it’s vital to plan for what happens when it’s time to access more support to stay at home. There are more than 100,000 people in the national queue for a Home Care Package. For those who do have funding, almost half of the packages are below the level the consumer was assessed for. However, there are options for consumers to get more out of their Home Care Packages.

In an interview with Bina Brown from the Australian Financial Review, Better Caring co-founder Peter Scutt explained that aged consumers self-managing their package can double their hours of care by booking a worker directly through the Better Caring platform.

Before Manuel, 73, and Isabel, 72, discovered the self-management option, they had been supported by more than 100 different carers over five years. They are now using the Better Caring platform and working with one of our Approved Provider partners, Let’s Get Care, to get more out of their home care packages. Self-managing means Isabel and Manuel benefit from low admin fees and a flexible approach to case management. By connecting with workers directly through the Better Caring platform, Isabel has increased her weekly hours of support from 24 to 37, with a team of just four workers. Where a provider typically charges $55 an hour, clients negotiate directly with workers on the platform, who generally charge in the range of $25-35.

Says Isabel, “Even though we had the packages, we had to find providers who would work with us and we did. Staying at home is best for Manuel but it is also best for me.”

Scutt added that Better Caring is also an affordable option for people on the waiting list who want to hire workers privately.
