Safe space: The power of an online community

We all joke about asking Dr Google when someone has the sniffles, an ache in their left arm or have a random question they want answered. Increasingly, when it comes to health, people are using social media as a place to turn for support.

Many Better Caring clients are already using online forums and other interest groups such as NDIS Grassroots to connect across time zones and geographies. Closer to home, we have an active Facebook community of independent support workers using Better Caring who share ideas, knowledge and expertise relating to their profession.

If you’re still weighing up whether online groups are right for you, here are some benefits to think about:

  • If living with an illness, a group can be a safe place for people going through a similar experience
  • If you live in a rural, regional or remote area, it may be the best way or even the only way to connect with others
  • If you or a loved one are living with a particular disability, you can exchange ideas about activities to do together, or information on how the NDIS works
  • If you or someone you care about is ageing, you can learn more about how best to navigate Home Care Packages and your funding options

Better Caring: a safe online space

Better Caring is an online platform which enables workers and consumers to find each other, and spend time together offline, building long-lasting relationships. And these connections are made safely. Independent care and support workers, as well as Allied Health practitioners, go through one of the most rigorous onboarding processes in the industry. This includes:

  • Providing proof of qualifications where relevant
  • Police and Working with Children Checks
  • Two references, which are verified by us
  • Insurance, providing full cover for any work delivered and paid for through the platform

The benefit of being able to choose your own workers means you don’t have to go through the process of building trust more often than you’d like. This is very different from the experience of many consumers coming to Better Caring who have previously faced a “revolving door” of different workers turning up every day.

We encourage consumers and workers to meet face to face before agreeing to work together, and many workers offer their time free of charge for that meeting. This is your chance to ask to see the paperwork and get a feel for whether you’d like to be supported by this person.
